Eugene Lami (1800-1890) was a distinguished and prolific painter of contemporary and historic scenes and a book illustrator. This design has a sale catalogue description mounted below with the previous lot which was an album of sketches by Lami (lot 430).

Another design for a fan by Lami, Rinaldo in the Garden of Armida and a fan by him, Don Quixote at the Duchess's 1838, sold at Hotel Drouot 16 April 1933. Lami painted a fan with sticks by Jules Vaillant for La Princess Amelie d'Orleans and another for the trousseau of the Countess of Paris. In 1886 he painted a fan with a view of the Chateau d'Eu for the Princesse Amelie, eldest daughter of the Comte de Paris on the occasion of her marriage to the future King of Portugal. That fan was bequeathed to Queen Mary, see: Unfolding Pictures, Fans in the Royal Collection, Jane Roberts, Prudence Sutcliffe and Susan Mayor, 2005, no. 59., currently exhibited at the Palace of Holyrood House until 29May 2006 and transferring to The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace 17 November 2006 - 11 February 2007. Other fans painted by or designed by Lami appeared in the great late 19th century exhibitions. Lami was a lithographer by training and he may have provided many of the well-drawn designs for 1860s lithographic fans.
