One of the most popular jewellery motifs of the late 1940s was the 'Ballerina' clip brooch that was extensively promoted by Van Cleef & Arpels. It characteristically depicted a dancer in a full dress decorated with diamonds and precious stones, pavé-set diamond bust and arms with a single rose-cut diamond representing the face.
It was designed by Maurice Duvallet, a former designer with Charlton as well as Cartier. Being so successful it was complemented by dancers from other jewellers, in particular Mellerio and Mauboussin
