Brass dial with engraved border, the arch above with painted moonphase, silvered spandrels to the corners, silvered Roman and Arabic chapterring, matted centre with silvered signature plaque signed Jan Bernardus Vrijthoff Hagae, eight-day twin barrel gut fusee movement with four ringed pillars, verge escapement, the movement secured with engraved brackets to the case, foliate engraved backplate; pendulum, crank key and door key
50 cm. high (handle up)
Provenance
(Probably) commissioned by the Kikkert Family, 18th Century;
(Probably) by descent to the Kikkert Family (an important entrepreneurial family in the Vlaardingen herring industry) and the related Van den Ham van Heijst Family, Vlaardingen, 19th Century;
By descent to Pieter Kikkert (1892-1942), Secretary of the Dutch Government in Surinam and member of the Board of Directors of Surinam, during the period 1931-1939.
Thence by descent to the present owner.
