A Dutch silver-mounted coconut cup
Maker's mark only for Hendrik Jansz van Hassel, Harlingen, circa 1640
On spreading foot, chased with laurel wreath border and four alternating plain and foliate panels, the nut finely carved with a scene of the Wedding at Canaan in an oval strapwork cartouche, and two further cartouches, one with an elegant man, the other with a lady, standing in a landscape with houses in the background, flanked by two oval medallions, one with monogram F*C.P., the other, T*S.H, centred by a further oval medallion carved with a flaming heart, two clasped hands and surrounded with the inscription GETROV, TOT.IN, DEN.DOOT, with foliate and plain mounted upper rim, with initials 'A*P', marked on base

Lot Essay

The present cup is decorated with texts and scenes concerning love and marriage. They resemble the scenes regularly found on wedding caskets and medals. The inscription on the present cup GETROV TOT IN DEN DOOT translates as 'faithful until death'. The scenes of the Wedding at Canaan are also found on a wedding casket sold at Christie's, Amsterdam, 13 November 2001, lot 366. The text on that casket reads: Getrout tot in den Doot (married until death).
