A EUBOEAN BLACK-FIGURED AMPHORA
circa 560-550 b.c.
The obverse with three bearded men approaching a seated woman, a sphinx standing guard behind her to the right, the men with red hair, all wearing red and black (one all-black) mantles with white trim, the lead figure extending a hand to the seated woman, her chair with lion's paw feet and a curving back terminating in a swan head, her feet resting on a foot stool, her red mantle with an incised decorative hem, the sphinx with white for the face and neck, red on the sickle-shaped wing, a lotus blossom below, a band of alternating red and black tongues above; the reverse with a pair of confronting panthers with their heads turned frontal, a bird above to the left, with two dot-rosettes and a row of dots in the field, a black band above; each side of the neck with vertical zigzag lines framing a ring, a graffito above the foot on the reverse
