Lot Essay

This service, known only as a tea-service, was made for António Xavier Machado e Cerveira. A saucer from this service is illustrated by N. de Castro, Chinese Porcelain and the Heraldry of the Empire, Opporto, 1988, p.161, and also in Martim de Albuquerque, 'A Loiça Brasonada Portuguesa', Oceanos, Porcelanas e Mares da China, 1993, no.14, p.62. A cup of slightly different form, together with its saucer, is illustrated by Conde de Castro e Solla, Ceramica Brazonada, Lisbon, 1992, vol. II, p.5.

It is interesting to note that the Chinese enameller has misinterpreted the intitials on the teabowl and has drawn a '6' instead of the 'C'.
