the lid painted with a scene of Meleager presenting Atlanta with the head of the Calydonian boar with attendant hound and satyr, the base with a depiction of the Virgin and child with St. Anne, the border decorated with a profusion of flowers, the interior decorated with wooded rocky landscapes, roccoco gold mounts, diameter 62mm.

In Greek mythology, Meleager was the son of a King of Calydon, a city in Aetolia. His father had offended the goddess Diana who sent a wild boar to ravage the countryside, and Meleager with a band of companions set out to hunt it. The first to wound it was the virgin huntress Atlanta whom Meleager loved. When the boar was killed Meleager presented her with the head and pelt.
