A FINE AND RARE TURQUOISE-GROUND FAMILLE ROSE LANTERN VASE
QIANLONG SEAL MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

The tall cylindrical body intricately enamelled to simulate cloisonne enamel, with two medallions of bats and peach sprays enclosing lotus and lingzhi fungus, surrounded by floral scrolls and large bats suspending Buddhist emblems, the base and shoulder of the vase encircled with alternating floral sprigs and shou characters, the waisted neck decorated with geometric patterns and the subtly splayed foot with a key-fret pattern (minor enamel flakes)

Previously sold in Hong Kong, 29 October 1991, lot 275.

No other example of this magnificent vase appears to have been published. Nevertheless, this vase illustrates the popular convention of the Qianlong period of using famille rose enamels as strong background colours, and in this case, the turquoise enamel serves to enhance the overall decoration. The dense scrolling pattern outlined in gilt against the strong turquoise ground produces an effect of porcelain imitating cloisonne enamel.
