A FINE PAIR OF BLUE AND WHITE 'EIGHT IMMORTALS' BOWLS QIANLONG SIX-CHARACTER SEALMARKS AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795) Each finely potted bowl is painted around the exterior with the Eight Immortals holding in their hands their respective attributes, all floating on clouds above swirling waves, the centre of the interior with a roundel enclosing the Three Star Gods, Fuxing, Luxing and Shouxing, seated under a pine tree, all within double-line borders 4 3/16 in. (10.8 cm) diam., box (2)

Lot Essay

The scene depicts the legend of the Eight Immortals crossing the sea, and this same detailed pattern is found on other bowl of the period sold in these Rooms, 7 July 2003, lot 656; a pair of similar bowls sold in the same Rooms, 28 October 2002, lot 703; and a single bowl from the Riesco Collection included in the O.C.S., Exhibition of Chinese Blue and White Procelain, London, 1954, no. 309.
