Lot Essay

Shoes constructed of silk identical to a sample in the collection of the V&A dated 1733, from or after a design by Anna Maria Garthwaite. See 'The Victoria & Albert Museum's Textile Collection: Woven Textiles Design in Britain to 1750,' pps. 66 & 67.

Thought to be the only example of extant shoes made from a Garthwaite silk.
