Lot Essay

The present lot consists of five of the original 25 lengths of paper and shows the central theme of the series titled Grande chasse de tigre dans l'Inde (fully illustrated in O. Nouvel-Kammerer, French Scenic Wallpaper, 1795-1865, Paris, 2000, no. 75). The design is recorded in the Zuber archives (inventory number Z 200). According to the achive the design dates from before 1818. The series was inspired by William and Thomas Daniell's Oriental Scenery (London, 1795).
