The natural side with king and queen modelled as European monarchs, the stained side with king and queen representing African leaders in feather headresses, the bishops as fous, the knights as horses' heads, rooks as turrets, the pawns as soldiers
The king -- 3½in. (9cm.) high; the pawn -- 2 3/8in. (6cm.) high

Lot Essay

The French colonial interests lay predominately in North Africa, from the late 18th century onwards, and many sets were carved in Dieppe from this period throughout the 19th Century to illustrate the two sides. Some sets, as with this lot, are carved and screwed with an integral ivory thread to Régence style bases. See Michael Mark, fig. 19.
