Rectangular box with cut corners, the cover centred with the oriental inscription 'Mohammed Amiran' in rose-cut diamonds on a frosted gold ground, the border engraved with a band of scrolling foliage on a champlevé opaque sky-blue enamel ground applied with 22 old mine-cut diamonds, the sides of burnished gold, the cut corners and base enamelled in opaque sky-blue champlevé with engraved gold trailing foliage and intertwined bands

Lot Essay

Gold boxes by Alexandre-Raoul Morel (born 1801), who took over the business of his father the famous goldsmith Gabriel-Raoul Morel in 1832, are rare. He was last recorded in 1850. Another presentation snuff-box, with inventory number 904, is illustrated in C. Truman, The Gilbert Collection of Gold Boxes, Los Angeles, 1991, p. 145, no. 51.
