Lot Essay

The present commode is inspired by a model of a console desserte executed by Jean-Henri Riesener in the early 1780s, an example of which is held in the Frick Collection, New York (Accession No. 1916.5.72). Testament to the popularity of this model in the nineteenth century, both Henry Dasson and Maison Krieger are recorded to have produced versions of this model. A console stamped by Dasson sold Christie’s, London, 22 September 2011, lot 30 (£32,450), while another stamped by Krieger sold Christie’s, London, 29 September 2005, lot 164 (£18,000 ). A nineteenth-century copy of the original console can also be found in the Frick Collection (Accession No. 1916.5.73).
