Surmounted by a brche violette breakfront marble top above egg-and-dart moulding, the frieze fitted with three drawers, above a pair of cupboard doors inlaid with a pastoral panel and flanked to each side with shaped lattice and flowerhead panels, the sides with similar decoration, the interior fitted with two shelves, on scroll acanthus feet

Lot Essay

This commode is a copy of the celebrated model by Jean-Henri Riesener, commissioned in 1778 for Louis XVI's cabinet de retraite at the chteau de Fontainebleau. It was then moved in 1779 to his bibliothque at Versailles. The commode was subsequently sold from The Collection of Barons Nathaniel and Albert von Rothschild, by Christie's, London, 8 July 1999, lot 201.
