Lot Essay

Louis Ernest Barrias (1841-1905) was the son of the miniaturist and ceramic decorator known as Barrias the Elder. Having studied at the Ecole de Beaux-Arts, Barrias won second prize in the 1861 Prix de Rome competition and won the prize in 1865. His many awards include a first class medal (1878), the Grand Prix (1889), Officer of the Legion of Honour and Member of the Academy (1884).
