A GEORGE III 'ANTIQUARIAN' IVORY-INLAID EBONY AND ROSEWOOD BUREAU
LATE 18TH EARLY 19TH CENTURY, INCORPORATING 17TH CENTURY INDIAN AND ITALIAN ENGRAVED-IVORY PANELS, THE INTERIOR SIGNED BY MICHAEL STADLER, 1651
The rectangular top above a hinged flap enclosing a fitted interior of pigeon-holes and cedar-lined drawers, above four graduated cedar-lined drawers, on bracket feet, the flap and lower drawers inlaid with Indian style flowers and scrolling foliage, the interior drawers with Italian engraved ivory panels depicting hounds, hares and fowl, with central panel inscribed 'Michael Stadler(?) fecit roma 1651', the lowest drawer later lined, restorations

Lot Essay

This antiquarian bureau was made in England, perhaps in emulation of a very small group of related bureau-cabinets made in India for English patrons using Indian marquetry, such as one sold Christie's, London, 18 November 1993, lot 195. The antiquarian combination of marquetry on this bureau is even more exotic, with 17th century Indian engraved ivory marquetry on the outside and European engraved ivory marquetry on the inside, the latter possibly from a small cabinet. A bureau-cabinet with similar Indian exterior marquetry and European interior marquetry was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 21 April 2005, lot 122.
