The pear-shaped plate wrapped with laurel below a pierced foliate cresting hung with husks, the pierced apron below a ribbon and rosette platform centred by a mask, some carved ornament possibly replaced

Lot Essay

The laurel-wreathed 'lyre' frame enriched with Roman acanthus relates to a Grecian palm-flowered wall-light of 'Apollo-lyre' form designed in 1777 by John Linnell (d. 1796) (see H. Hayward, 'The Drawings of John Linnell in the Victoria and Albert Museum', Furniture History, 1969, fig. 124).
