Lot Essay

The distinctive S-pattern keyhole is a feature used nearly exclusively by Thomas Chippendale, although only occasionally recorded on furniture by his competitor John Cobb (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, vol. I, p. 253, and vol. II, p. 147, fig. 267).
