Lot Essay

The handles on this chest correspond to those on a commode that was supplied to the 9th Earl of Winchilsea for Burley-on-the-Hill, Rutland, in the mid-1770s, almost certainly by Mayhew and Ince. The commode was sold from Burley by E.R.Hanbury, Esq., in these Rooms, 6 July 1989, lot 147. The handles are also found on pieces from Mayhew and Ince's Broadlands commission (see: H.Roberts, 'Furniture at Broadlands II', Country Life, 5 February 1981, p.346, figs. 1 and 2)
