Lot Essay

This table is almost certainly that illustrated in Percy Macquoid's The Age of Satinwood where even the minor losses in his photograph are clearly replaced on the present table. However, the measurements given by Macquoid are slightly different (60 in. wide and 32 in. deep), which may have been an error on his part.

A sideboard table design of 1788 by Gillows of Lancaster for John Christian features the unusual foliage carved panels on the legs, also headed by tapering reeded and leaf-carved capitals, as in the present table. Whilst a date as late as the 1780s might seem implausible for this table, a client of Gillows with retardataire taste cannot be ruled out (L. Boynton (ed.), Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 90).
