This table is almost certainly that illustrated in Percy Macquoid's The Age of Satinwood where even the minor losses in his photograph are clearly replaced on the present table. A sideboard table design of 1788 by Gillows of Lancaster for John Christian features the unusual foliage carved panels on the legs, also headed by tapering reeded and leaf-carved capitals, as in the present table. Whilst a date as late as the 1780s might seem implausible for this table, a client of Gillows with retardataire taste cannot be ruled out (L. Boynton (ed.), Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 90).
