With rectangular banner covered with a petit point needlework scene of a traveller with a house beyond on the front and a piece of Chinese painted wallpaper on the reverse, on a cluster rope-twist column and scrolled cabriole legs
60 in. (152.5 cm.) high; the banner: 23 x 21½ in. (58.5 x 54.5 cm.)

Lot Essay

A related pair of polescreens was supplied for Harewood House, Yorkshire by Thomas Chippendale (illustrated in C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1968, vol. II, fig. 333). Another tripod polescreen with banner backed with Chinese paper was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 7 June 2007, lot 31.
