TWO TABLES FROM HOLYROOD PALACE The following two tables (lots 113 and 114) formed part of the Holyrood Palace furnishings of the Grace-and-Favour apartment granted to John Campbell, 2nd Marquess of Breadalbane (d. 1862) by Queen Victoria. In 1860 the Queen visited Edinburgh and the Marquess led the Grand Review of the Volunteer Forces in Scotland. These tables were among the Holyrood furnishings removed that year to the Marquess' Perthshire estate at Taymouth Castle. Part of the Palace was refurnished in the 1740s under the direction of the architect William Adam, and the Young Pretender (Bonnie Prince Charlie) held court there in 1745, followed shortly afterwards by the Duke of Cumberland. It is possible that these furnishings were prized because of their historical associations with the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745.

With canted rectangular tilt-top, on a fluted baluster column and cabriole legs with pointed pad feet, with ivorine label inscribed 'BROUGHT TO TAYMOUTH FROM THE MARQUIS OF BREADALBANE'S APARTMENTS AT HOLYROOD PALACE MAY 16TH. 1860.', the ash block at the top of the column, possibly replaced in then 19th century
28½ in. (72 cm.) high; 30½ in. (77.5 cm.) wide; 25½ in. (65 cm.) deep
