Lot Essay

Thomas Sheraton in The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1793 (pl. XLIII) illustrated this tapered herm leg pattern, with elegant plinth-supported Grecian scroll. It was also published in that year as a 'Standard for tripod face Screens' in The Cabinet-Makers London Book of Prices (pl. 29, no. 4), which had been launched in 1788. Messrs Gillows of London and Lancaster's 1794 Estimate Sketch Book also features a related 'octagon work table' (L. Boynton (ed), Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 76).
