Lot Essay

These stands were sometimes made in sets to take salvers of different sizes on a sideboard. A similar one is illustrated in R. Edwards, The Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture, London, 1964, p. 498, fig. 2. A set of three plate-stands was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 18 April 1996, lot 63.
