ATTRIBUTED TO GILLOWS, CIRCA 1825
The rounded rectangular top above two mahogany-lined frieze drawers, on reeded and ring-turned baluster end-supports and rectangular platforms, on bun feet with sunk brass castors, the underside of one drawer inscribed in chalk 'HODGSON'
28¼ in. (72 cm.) high; 53¼ in. (135 cm.) wide; 27½ in. (70 cm.) deep

Lot Essay

Close variants of this pattern appear in the Gillows Estimate Sketch Books for 24 September 1824, no. 3371, and 10 October 1828, no. 3684, one for a Mr Dagmall and the other to Captain Armitage. The 1828 pattern cost just over £9 5s but was fitted with end-drawers.
A closely related rosewood writing-table of nearly identical design was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 16 September 2004, lot 33.
A galleried version of this table, with baize-lined top, was supplied in 1822 to William, 4th Earl Fitzwilliam (d.1833) for Wentworth Woodhouse, Yorkshire, and sold in the Wentworth sale, Christie's, London, 8 July 1998, lot 83.
Several craftsmen named 'Hodgson' are recorded as cabinet-makers in Gillows Estimate Sketch Book from 1787-1825.
