The kings modelled as 'Noble' the lion, and the queens as his weeping consort, the bishops as 'Reynard', the knights as 'Reynard' drinking from a cup, the rooks as 'Reynard' seated atop a turret, the pawns as 'Reynard' seated on haunches howling, one side stained brown
The king -- 3½in. (9cm.) high; the pawn -- 2¼in. (5.8cm.) high

Lot Essay

The story of Reynard the Fox was first written by Goethe, 1793. This set depicts Reynard in numerous guises and other animals assuming human poses. The king is 'Noble' the lion, in this instance wearing spectacles, the bishops are Reynard the judge and Reynard the priest, the knights are Reynard drinking, the rooks are towers carved with Reynard seated reading and Reyard dressed in country attire.
