A GERMAN WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING RIFLE FOR A CHILD
circa 1640-50
With swamped octagonal sighted barrel cut with six grooves, struck with a shield-shaped mark filled with a three-leaf sprig, together with a further mark twice (I.F incomplete), flat lock, external wheel retained by a shaped ring, fruitwood full stock inlaid over the rear with a series of engraved horn plaques, including a human grotesque mask and the figure of a sportsman opposite the lock, various game animals in architectural landscapes, a man kneeling with a foal on the cheekpiece, all within segmental lines of cabled horn, and the latter continued over the length of the fore-end, with sliding patch-box cover decorated with a pair of hunting putti issuant from a demon mask, iron trigger-guard, and later horn-tipped ramrod (the stock with small repairs, small pieces of inlay replaced, and later ramrod-pipes and fore-end cap of engraved horn).
