The hinged lid with a central monogram for George V, further inscribed 'L.HARCOURT/C.I.D./SECREATARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES/1911', with a gilt-brass handle to one end

Lot Essay

Lewis Vernon Harcourt, 1st Viscount Harcourt (1863-1922) was the Liberal MP for Rossendale, Lancashire from 1904 until 1916. In 1910 he was appointed Secretary of State for the Colonies, a postion he held until 1915.
