The gold band struck twice with traces of Royal tax stamp, once with initials under a crown, P in a circular punch, the Mexico mint mark M with dot between, the initial V with date 1659 under a crown in circular punch--4.24 ozs.
On July 13, 1733, the Spanish Plate Fleet, under the command of Admiral Don Rodrigo de Torres, left Havana. By the 15th, when the ships were well into the Bahamas Channel, a severe hurricane struck, scattering the ships and sweeping seventeen onto the jagged reefs of the Florida Keys. This gold bullion was probably recovered from a wreck of the 1733 Spanish Plate Fleet.
