The front set with commemorative gold medal of General Lafayette dated 1824, the year of his visit to America, within a square-cut sapphire, ruby and diamond frame inscribed "Libertas", the reverse inscribed "The defender of American and French Liberty. 1777-1824. Born in Chavaniac, The 6 Septembre 1757", joined by a sculpted gold eagle and fleur-de-lys to a polished 18K gold curb link chain, mounted in 18K gold, 21 ins. (back of chain detaches to make necklace 15¾ ins.)
