A gray schist figure of Buddha
Gandhara, 3rd/4th century
Seated on a covered low base carved with four Buddhas flanked by devotees at the front, the hands in dhyana mudra, draped in a thin sanghati, the face with acquline nose and almond-shaped eyes, the hair arranged in stylized spiral curls, backed by a round halo
27 7/8 in. (70.6 cm.) high
The treatment of the drapery with raised ridges indicating the folds is remarkable and reflects Indian influence leading into Gupta style.
