Details
A gray schist figure of Buddha with a round nimbus
Gandhara, 2nd/3rd century
Well carved with his right hand raised in abhaya mudra, his long flowing robe draped across both shoulders with concentric cascading folds, his face with a benign expression, backed by a round nimbus with sawtooth border, the features, hand and drapery very finely rendered
28¾ in. (73 cm.) high

Lot Essay

The carving of this sculpture emphasizes a sense of movement and a focus on the fear-abiding gesture. For a related example with a similar petal border on the nimbus, see I. Kurita, Gandharan Art, vol. II, 2003, fig. 269, p. 102.
