Lot Essay

Diederich's desire to extend the scope and appeal of sculpture through the decorative arts is reflected in these numerous drawings and designs for firescreens, gates, and brackets. During the 1930s, he received several important commissions for public projects in New York, including a monument to the First World War, formerly installed in Union Square, designs for signs at Prospect Park Zoo, as well as the six weathervanes for Central Park Zoo. These weathervanes were replaced with copies of the originals when the Zoo was renovated in 1988, and remain on view today.
