Details
A Gustave Vichy Chinese smoker automaton with papier-mâché head, brown paperweight eyes with articulated lids, articulated lower jaw, black hair wig and moustache, holding a pipe in his right hand and a bone-topped cane in his left, the going-barrel movement in the body causing the figure to turn his head and slowly raise the pipe to his mouth, then look to the left and lift his head, blinking and opening his mouth to exhale, in the original embroidered crimson silk longcoat with bead-encrusted collar and cumerbund, gold satin trousers and matching lace-edged sleeves -- 27½in. (70cm.), the motor stamped G. Vichy, Paris, (eyelids brittle, three fingers repaired, mouth movement in need of adjustment), circa 1890
