A HARDSTONE-INLAID AND CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER TABLE SCREEN
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
One side of the rectangular screen inlaid with soapstone, nephrite, agate, mother-of-pearl, carved wood and stained bone with a landscape scene depicting a deer grasping a lingzhi stem in its mouth and gazing at a crane and two bats in flight, beside a gnarled pine tree, entwined with vines bearing red berries, growing from behind a pierced ornamental rock, the reverse side with sixty mother-of-pearl stylised characters of alternating, fu, 'fortune' and shou, 'longevity', the panel with a cinnabar lacquer frame carved with bi-discs lined by rope twist and fitted into a lacquer stand carved with lotus scrolls and wan-symbols (some losses replaced)
