The late Peter Lehmann-Bärenklau was originally from the state of Brandenburg in Germany. He was born just before the First World War, into a wealthy merchant family whose business in this field had been going for a number of generations. Recent sales had gone well, expanding into the international market. His father had built a grand house near the manufactory, appropriate to their improved status. During the inter-war years the business continued and on his father’s death in 1940 he took charge of all the family businesses.
Five years later he walked out of what was about to become East Germany with just a single small suitcase, leaving generations of family existence behind. Settling in Hamburg he began a very modest life, in a small house, with little trace of his previous life. However, his style remained. He was the perfect pre-war gentleman, invariably dressed in a beautifully cut three-piece suit, with exquisite manners that were completely natural.
