The first two medals were awarded to Eleanor Roosevelt and John A. Roosevelt personally by F.D.R. on the occasion of his fourth inauguration as President in 1945. The sailing ship on the reverse of these and the verse by Longfellow is a reference to the wartime relationship between F.D.R. and Winston Churchill. The third item was presented to Mrs. Roosevelt by the mayor of St. Lô on her visit to the city in 1947. St. Lô had been the scene of heavy fighting during World War II. The inaugural medal awarded to Eleanor Roosevelt was exhibited at the F.D.R. Centennial in 1982 in New York State; the St. Lô medal was exhibited at the Eleanor Roosevelt Centennial in 1984 in New York State. (3)
