A HUNGARIAN DRESS SABRE
Dated 1848
With earlier curved hollow-ground single-edged blade double-edged at the point, etched on one side of the forte with the Virgin and Child above the inscription 'S. Maria Patrona Hungariae sub Tuum Praesidium confugimus', and on the other side with the royal arms of Hungary above the initials 'I v. L' in a cartouche over the date 1741, nearer the tip the etched inscription 'Joseph von Lippert 1848 Vertrau dich mir nicht an! Wenn das Herz Dir Fehlt: mich zu Führen!', the hilt entirely of silvered white-metal with eagle-head pommel and swelling trumpet-shaped fluted quillons, and set throughout with turquoises (one missing from the grip), in original shagreen-covered scabbard with chased silvered white-metal mounts also set with turquoises and with two suspension-rings, the mouth-locket with the arms of Hungary and those of the owner
