Rifle No. 17219 belongs to the noted falling-block rifle specialist and author Jonathan Kirton and the history and specification of this rifle are detailed in his book The British Falling Block Breechloading Rifle From 1865. The rifle was built circa 1895 in .461 calibre and was returned to Gibbs in 1910 to be fitted with a new .303 straight taper Metford barrel. The present telescopic-sight was fitted at the same time. Gibbs built a total of 974 Farquharson rifles and no more than about 50 were completed in .303 calibre
