A LACQUER WRITING TABLE (BUNDAI)
meiji period (late 19th century)
Of characteristic rectangular shape set on four tapered legs, the writing surface designed in black, gold and silver togidashi, gold hiramaki-e and takamaki-e, nashiji, keuchi, okibirame, uchikomi and roiro with motifs representing 'The Eight Views of Omi [Lake Biwa]' (Omi hakkei), including the pine tree at Karasaki, the returning sails at Yabase, and snow on Mount Hira, the rounded hills in the distance of gold and black togidashi, the hulls of two of the boats, the moorings and 'windows' of the tea hut on the shore of inlaid mother-of-pearl, the legs of the table patterned in gold togidashi with waves, their edges fundame and inner sides nashiji, the underside of the writing surface also nashiji and the mounts silver cast with chrysanthemums
