Lot Essay

The present and next works are examples of highly finished large-scale drawings with delicately applied color that are characteristic of the Kishangarh atelier prior to the 1740s. Compare with A Lady Playing the Tanpura at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (1996.100.1); see Kossak, Indian Court Painting: 16th-19th Century, 1997, p. 96, cat. no. 57.
