Lot Essay
Large three-part garnitures of this type were not placed on cupboards as a Kaststel or a cupboard garniture, they were instead used in grand town and country houses, e.g. Palace het Loo, Apeldoorn, for filling the fireplaces in the summer, when these were not in use. They appear in design prints by Daniel Marot. In the collection of the Amsterdams Historisch Museum in Amsterdam there is a painting by Nicolaas Duyven (1650-1719) of an interior with fireplace pots adorning the hearth.
The above fireplace garniture bears the curious feature that pseudo-Chinese ideograms are incorporated in the Cachemire pattern, which is idiosyncratic of Dutch Delft. The objects belonging to this category and with this quality are usually marked with the LVE monogram.
