Lot Essay

This is not a fossil but an inorganic phenomenon. After the limestone has formed, water has percolated along fine fissures and seeped into the rock depositing iron and manganese in this flower-like pattern. This German deposit is famous for producing very finely preserved fossils such as dragonflies, shrimps and most famously the Archaeopteryx.
