Surmounted by Psyche adorning Cupid with a floral wreath, above an arched clockcase centred by a circular clockface with Roman chapters and twin-train movement, on a rectangular plinth base with acanthus moulding and paw feet

Lot Essay

The tale of Cupid and Psyche was a popular theme in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Michallon was clearly inspired by Classical examples, such as the Capitoline Kiss, when he designed the graceful embrace atop the original model on which this clock is based.
