The breakfront marble top above an egg-and-dart moulding above a ribbon-tied rose-garland frieze drawer, the body flanked to each front corner by a ram's head above ribbon-tied musical trophies, centred by a door inlaid with still-life decoration, opening to reveal an interior fitted with two adjustable shelves, above a foliate decorated apron on four paw feet, each headed by acanthus, stamped twice to the reverse and twice to the top of the carcass GROHE A PARIS

Lot Essay

This commode is inspired by the numerous models delivered by Riesener to Versailles and Fontainebleau for Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette.

The firm of Groh was established in the mid 1820s in Paris by Guillaume and Jean-Michel Groh. They exhibited at the major exhibitions throughout the 19th century and supplied furniture to the French Royal households, as well as to Queen Victoria. Following Guillaume's retirement in 1861, the younger brother Jean-Michel managed the business until 1884, when it ceased trading.
