A LARGE KESI RECTANGULAR PANEL
18th Century
Woven and painted with the Eight Daoist Immortals, Shoulao and their attendants within the celestial setting of Xiwangmu's mountain palace where the peaches of immortality grow, the goddess Xiwangmu and her attendants seen floating on a cloud above, all woven in muted shades of blue, gray, brown, green, yellow and cream against a sand-colored ground, with details painted in black and some woven in gold thread, with two seals in red ink in the upper left corner

Lot Essay

A large kesi panel depicting the same scene was included in the Urban Council of Hong Kong exhibition, Heaven's Embroidered Cloths, One Thousand Years of Chinese Textiles, Hong Kong Museum of Art, June 23, 1995 - September 17, 1995, Catalogue, no. 338, where the authors describe the subject matter of the weaving as "a group of immortals offering birthday felicitations to the Queen Mother of the West (Xiwangmu)"
