A Large Lacquer Trunk (Nagamochi)
Edo period (19th century)
Rectangular, with an overhanging lip and a slightly domed, hinged cover and decorated with various heraldic crests surrounded by peonies and scrolling vines in gold, silver, red and green lacquer against a black-lacquer ground, the outlines of the flowers carved in sunken relief, gilt-copper hardware engraved with lozenges and crests with scrolling vines, interior with modern cedar-wood lining with sliding doors
