The rectangular top centred by a flower-filled basket in an oval frame, the frieze centred to the front and back by a bacchic scene, flanked to each side by foliate swags and roundels, the sides each with conforming swags and roundels, the front fitted with a drawer, on four cabriole legs, on paw feet with acanthus terminals; the carcass stamped CREMER MARQUETEUR

Lot Essay

Born in 1811, Joseph Cremer was artiste en mosaique et marqueterie. He supplied furniture to King Louis-Philippe of France and to the King of Holland. He was awarded a medal at the 1839, 1844 and 1849 exhibitions. At the 1855 Paris Great Exhibition, the jury stated that 'Comme ton, comme dessin, il est impossible d'atteindre dans un travail de marqueterie à plus d'harmonie et de justesse.'. He was awarded the Medaille d'Honneur at the 1862 London Great Exhibition.
