The rock of irregular shape has a strong protruding overhang to one side and a prominent central hole supported by smaller subsidiary holes. The surface of the stone is deeply wrinkled and has raised veins.

Lot Essay

This scholar’s rock has a dramatic sense of movement created by the tension between the irregular jutting and protruding silhouette expanding from the large irregularly shaped hole and smaller, subsidiary holes. There is almost a feeling of it being a floating island lapped at its base by a crashing wave formed by an upturned projection. The deeply wrinkled ‘skin’ has a lustrous patina and protruding veins typical of the best examples of Wen stone.
